Epiphanies: Baptism of Jesus

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” ~ Mark 1:9-11

You are my Son. The Beloved.

This was a quiet epiphany. In Mark's telling of Jesus' baptism, the epiphany revealing the Messiah came not to all the bystanders at his baptism - we don't even know it there were any. If so, maybe they heard it, maybe they didn't...

But the revelation was meant for Jesus.

You are my Son. You are the Beloved.

You are the Messiah.

Like me, most of you who are reading this probably don't remember that claim that was made at your own baptism, so let me remind you:

You are a child of God.

You are beloved.

You.

May that epiphany capture you today, and may you be reminded of that revelation every day.

Help me to feel your claim on me today, Holy One, that I might be a light shining in the darkness. Amen
