Arise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
For darkness shall cover the earth
and thick darkness the peoples,
but the Lord will arise upon you,
and his glory will appear over you.
Nations shall come to your light
and kings to the brightness of your dawn. ~ Isaiah 60:1-3
Matthew never calls the visitors from the east "kings," but it is likely from this passage in Isaiah that the image of them as kings came from.
Whether they are kings or magicians or astronomers, these are visitors to the child Jesus from the "nations." They are from "there" not "here."
They are "those" people.
Not "our" people.
Yet they are drawn to the same light we are.
An epiphany is a manifestation of the divine. And, at least as far as Matthew goes, the first to see this manifestation of the divine were the wrong people.
Not the people we would have chosen.
Many are drawn to the Light, and we can either help others to see if more clearly, or we can block it from view.
We can know the Light is for all people, or we can try to hoard it for ourselves.
If we do that, however, we risk looking sight of the Light altogether.
Help me to see your Light and share its glow with others! Amen
