I am Yours

Writer's picture: Allison WilcoxAllison Wilcox

The Lord exists forever;

    your word is firmly fixed in heaven.

Your faithfulness endures to all generations;

    you have established the earth, and it stands fast.

By your appointment they stand today,

    for all things are your servants.

If your law had not been my delight,

    I would have perished in my misery.

I will never forget your precepts,

    for by them you have given me life.

I am yours; save me,

    for I have sought your precepts.

The wicked lie in wait to destroy me,

    but I consider your decrees.

I have seen a limit to all perfection,

    but your commandment is exceedingly broad. ~ Psalm 119:89-96

I admit that some days are harder to pray than others.

Are there days when you just don't know what to say? Maybe the world feels overwhelming. Maybe there are so many things and people to pray for that you can't come up with them all.

Maybe you've been told that you should pray all the time - and that has made prayer almost feel like a burden.

Maybe you just don't think you do it right.

Maybe you wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep and wonder why this happens to you all the time.

Maybe you are feeling down about yourself. Or alone. Lonely. Unhealthy.

Maybe there are relationships in your life that just aren't going the way you wish they would.

When I'm feeling that way, there is one prayer that I fall back to time and time again.

"I am yours."

Nothing and no one can take that away from me. I have been claimed, and even in moments of depression, anxiety, or my own sinfulness, that prayer holds me fast.

You are held by the One true God. You are loved and held.

When words fail, try those out for size.

Holy One, I am yours. Let me never forget. Amen
